About Udny Designs

Hi there, I’m Adrian — a maker, designer and workshop tinkerer based in rural Scotland. With a background in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a lifelong love of making things, I enjoy combining creativity, craftsmanship and hands-on problem solving to bring ideas to life.

Whether I’m experimenting in the workshop, sketching out new concepts or building with reclaimed materials, I’m always exploring new ideas, techniques and slightly unusual projects.

How Udny Designs Started

I started Udny Designs in 2014 as a creative outlet for the ideas and projects constantly taking shape in my workshop. One afternoon I was in the garage — boiler suit on, welding mask raised, bashing away at a piece of metal — when my neighbour popped her head in and asked what I was building this time.

“A snow plough for the front of the boys’ electric Jeep,” I replied.

I had a grand plan to clear the drive and paths without any manual labour. I showed her my wooden prototype, complete with an electric linear actuator that could raise and lower the plough at the flick of a switch.

There’s even a video of the results somewhere!

“You should start a blog,” she laughed. “You’re always up to something.”

So here I am — sharing my workshop experiments, handmade creations and slightly crazy projects from rural Scotland.

Making Things in Rural Scotland

I live in the small village of Udny Station — just north of Aberdeen in rural Scotland — which is where the name Udny Designs comes from. Much of my inspiration comes from the workshop itself, the surrounding countryside and a love of making things by hand.

I enjoy working with wood, metal, reclaimed materials, sea glass, electronics and just about anything else that sparks an idea or creative experiment. Some projects begin as rough sketches or workshop tinkering, while others evolve into handcrafted pieces for craft fairs, commissions and personal requests.

Whether it’s a quirky one-off build or a handmade gift with character, I enjoy the process of turning raw materials and ideas into something unique.
