Built for my son Jamie when he outgrew his first bed, this handmade campervan bed combines practical design with imagination and adventure.
Constructed from 18mm MDF and planed pine, the bed was carefully shaped, painted and detailed to capture the look of a classic VW campervan. Beneath the raised sleeping area is a hidden den space — perfect for relaxing, reading and imaginative play.
One of my favourite features is the sliding side door, inspired by a real campervan, along with custom details including storage areas, shaped panels and handcrafted finishes throughout the build.
Designed and built in my workshop in rural Scotland, this project remains one of my favourite creative builds to date.
The finished campervan bed brought together weeks of sketches, workshop experiments and handcrafted details to create a fun and practical space inspired by classic VW campers.
From the sliding side door to the hidden den area below, every part of the build was designed to encourage imagination, adventure and everyday use.
Like most projects at Udny Designs, the campervan bed began with rough sketches, measurements and plenty of experimentation in the workshop.
From cutting the MDF panels and shaping the campervan bodywork to sanding, painting and assembling the final structure, every stage of the build was handmade and carefully developed over time.
Projects like this often begin with rough sketches, workshop experiments and a bit of imagination. I’m currently exploring downloadable plans and creative build ideas inspired by some of my favourite handmade projects.
